Your journey takes you through various regions of the Underground, each with its unique landscape, inhabitants, and challenges. You soon discover that the Underground is home to a diverse array of monsters, some friendly, others hostile.

When battles do occur, you'll use a bullet hell-inspired system, where you'll need to navigate a bullet-like pattern of attacks and defensive maneuvers. The twist? You can choose to spare your enemies, rather than defeating them.

The game's protagonist, Toriel, a kind and ancient monster, becomes a guiding light on your journey. She teaches you about the history of the Underground and the human-monster conflict.

The pacifist route is a core aspect of Undertale. By showing kindness and compassion, you can build relationships with the monsters and ultimately find a way to peacefully resolve the conflict. This path requires careful decision-making, as a single misstep could lead to a fight.

As you navigate through the dark tunnels and lush forests, you encounter a group of monsters who become your guides and potential allies. There's Papyrus, a skeleton with a goofy demeanor, and Sans, his laid-back brother. You also meet Undyne, a fish-like monster with a passion for justice, and Alphys, a shy but kind scientist.

As you explored the Underground, you stumbled upon a sign that read "Welcome to the Underground! Please do not try to escape. It is not safe." But you're determined to find a way back home.
