For decades, language was a formidable barrier to the cross-pollination of Indian film industries. With the advent of satellite television (e.g., Sun TV, Zee Tamil) and later, streaming giants (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar), dubbing has become a sophisticated tool for market expansion. This paper argues that the success of top Tamil dubbed movies is not merely a function of star power but of universal storytelling, high production value, and strategic distribution.
While primarily a Kannada film, its Tamil dubbed version became a benchmark. However, focusing on Tamil output: Vikram (2022) and Jailer (2023) demonstrated the reverse flow. To identify “top” dubbed movies, this study aggregates data from three sources: 1) Television TRP ratings for dubbed premiere telecasts (2020-2025), 2) Streaming viewership hours on Hindi-dubbed versions, and 3) YouTube view counts for official dubbed trailers and song releases.
