Frames Out of Focus
The screen flickered. Somebody’s hand—the ripper’s—briefly obscured the bottom corner, reaching for a remote. Then the Cousins beach house materialized, washed out and too blue, like a memory already drowning.
Susannah’s garden was overgrown on the rip. The colors bled. Belly watched herself walk across the screen—a ghost from a few months ago, not knowing what was coming. The audio lagged slightly, so every slam of a screen door arrived a heartbeat after the visual. It made everything feel haunted.
She reopened the laptop. Hit play. The hand appeared again in the corner, reaching for something off-screen.
The screen went black, and in the reflection, she saw her own face—younger than she felt, older than she wanted to be. The summer she turned pretty wasn’t on a server somewhere. It was the static between the frames.
She didn’t mind the watermark of another person watching, too. It made her feel less alone.
The rip skipped three frames just as Conrad said, “I didn’t want you to find out like this.” His face froze for a second—mouth open, eyes wet—then jumped to a close-up of Belly’s trembling chin. The glitch felt like a held breath.
