It was during the semi-finals, with Leo’s mech at 12% structural integrity and an enemy railgun charging for a killshot, that Mr. Henderson, the IT administrator, walked in.

Henderson looked at the USB. He looked at the projector screen showing his old username. He looked at the students, who for the first time weren’t seeing him as a digital jailer, but as a potential teammate—or opponent.

“It’s no use,” sighed Maya, Leo’s friend and fellow mech-pilot, staring at the error message: ACCESS DENIED – CATEGORY: GAMES/VIOLENT . “NetNanny has a new update. It’s even blocking proxy sites.”

They played furtively at first, using low graphics and muting the sounds of screeching metal and explosive decompression. Leo piloted his main mech, a rust-bucket but agile unit called Packet Loss , while Maya commanded the heavy artillery mech Firewall Breach . Together, they climbed the tournament ladder, disabling opponents with perfectly timed grapples and magnetic slingshots.

“We’re in,” he said. The entire back row of the computer lab erupted in hushed cheers.

“Detention still stands,” he said. “But bring your USB. We have a prototype VR rig to test.”

Henderson froze. Admin_H_01 was his old handle. Back in college, before he became the warden of this digital prison, he’d been a ranked TechGrapple player. He’d even designed part of the grappling physics engine.
