The story begins in 1991. British director Ken Loach released Riff-Raff , a gritty, darkly comedic drama about working-class construction workers in London. Shot on 16mm film with natural lighting, it captured raw performances from actors like Robert Carlyle. The film won the European Film Award for Best Picture. In 2018, a collector in Glasgow found a rare Swedish broadcast master of Riff-Raff . Using a capture card, he recorded the uncompressed stream. Then, he encoded it into an MKV using the x264 codec at a high bitrate—8,000 kbps—retaining the film’s natural grain while keeping the file size manageable.
