The plot thickens when it is revealed that Mui uses the prisoners to perform a forbidden ritual to revive the Box of Ultimate Bliss — a mythical artifact that can grant any wish but requires a living sacrifice. The true antagonist is Mui’s subordinate, Kazan, who seeks to use the box’s power to become immortal. Naruto’s “crime” was engineered by Konoha (with Tsunade’s secret knowledge) as an infiltration mission to destroy the box once and for all.
