That night, the king’s advisor—a man known only as El Duende (The Goblin)—visited Cristóbal in his dressing room. El Duende was tall, gaunt, with eyes the color of a dead fireplace. He wore no suit of diamonds. He wore a black cassock, like a defrocked priest.

“Little tailor,” El Duende whispered through the stitches, “you laughed. And now I can almost laugh too. Do you know what happens when I finally do? The world will hear it, and every happy memory will turn to ash. So I will make you an offer. Stop laughing. Become silent. And I will let you live.”

He did. Three nights later, Mateo woke to find El Duende sitting at the foot of his bed, wearing the tattered, faded diamond suit. The goblin’s face was pale, and his lips were stitched together with the same silver thread he used on his victims—but the thread was fraying. A small smile was breaking through. Mateo didn’t look up

One night in 1928, Cristóbal performed at the Royal Theatre before King Alfonso XIII. He did not bow. Instead, he looked the king in the eye and laughed. It was a kind laugh, a gentle one, the laugh of a grandfather tickling a baby. But the king felt his crown loosen. The generals in the audience felt their sabers turn to lead.

He began to hunt them. Every harlequin in Spain. Not to kill them—no, that would be merciful. He captured them and sewed their mouths shut with silver thread, then locked them in the basement of a defunct monastery outside Toledo. There, they could not laugh. He opened a drawer and took out the bone needle. Then he took a deep breath, walked to the lemon tree in the courtyard, and dug up the clay pot. Inside was not laughter—not as sound.
