For three years, Elsa lives as a beloved, partially domesticated member of the Adamson household—swimming in the river, sleeping on their beds, and playing with their jeep. Director James Hill wisely avoids anthropomorphizing Elsa. The lioness is never given silly voiceover or cartoonish expressions. Instead, he uses long, quiet takes of Elsa simply being : stalking a bird, ignoring a command, or staring at the horizon. The film’s power comes from the painful reality that Elsa is both a friend and a wild thing. The lioness playing Elsa (there were several trained lions used, notably a female named “Elsa” herself) is magnificent.
