When you hear the name "Aladdin," you immediately think of magic lamps, flying carpets, and a genie granting wishes. In 2015, Tamil cinema decided to put its own spin on the classic Arabian Nights tale with Alavudeen , directed by T. S. B. K. Moulee.

On paper, it had the ingredients for a fun family entertainer. In reality, the film became a classic example of style struggling to compensate for a lack of substance. The film loosely follows the Aladdin framework but adds a Tamil commercial masala twist. Sakthi (Mithun Mithra) is a poor, happy-go-lucky young man living with his mother. After a run-in with a sly magician (Moulee), he stumbles upon a magical lamp containing a genie.

In the end, Alavudeen proves that a magic lamp alone isn’t enough. You need a sharp script, modern VFX, and a charismatic hero to grant a film’s wish for success. Unfortunately, this genie stayed firmly trapped inside its dusty, low-budget bottle.
